Review Response #1: On Seth And Sara
Apr. 17th, 2013 02:09 am"I'll admit that I don't believe that he would wait this long to ask about his sister. I think it would be the only issue on his mind and that he would relentlessly pursue it until he got an answer." -AvilaAddy, Aftershocks Chapter Three
This is a good observation, and while it would seem to be true, the only way to really understand why Seth isn't panic-stricken at his sister's seeming absence is to understand their relationship in the first place. Some of this will be addressed in Aftershocks, but here is a bit more of an in-depth look at Seth and Sara.
As twins, Seth and Sara already have a closer relationship than most siblings. They are more than just brother and sister, they are best friends and confidants. They rarely if ever fight, even though they spend most of their time together, and have the same mindset about most things, right down to finishing each others' sentences. They hang out with the same circles, have the same friends, the same likes and dislikes and opinions (for the most part.)
However, all of this is compounded by the fact that they are also Gifted. (This will be explored a bit in the fic, it's not really a crucial part of the storyline, so I don't feel like it's too much of a spoiler for things to come.) While they each have their own Gift (Fetching for Seth and FarSight for Sara), they both share the common Gift of Empathy. Due to this, on top of them having the typical relationship that twins tend to have, Seth and Sara can literally Feel each other inside their minds.
When Seth wakes up in Healers', he can still Feel Sara there, even though he can't physically see her, so despite Ryn and Tanay both originally avoiding the topic of his sister, he doesn't panic. In fact, on top of being able to Feel her, Seth is still able to even Speak to her via Mindspeech. As far as Seth is concerned, she might as well just be in the next room over or somewhere else within the Collegium or Haven. Because she's still a constant in his mind and the Bond between them hasn't been "broken", he doesn't worry too much, even though he hasn't actually seen Sara since the earthquake. Even after Tanay revealed the truth to him, his reaction isn't grief but disbelief because to him, Sara still Feels very much alive.
If, on the other hand, he had woken and hadn't been able to Feel Sara and talk to her, then of course he would have panicked straight away.
It also helped that Ryn (and, to a lesser extent, Tanay) very pointedly kept Seth sedated for much of the time directly after the earthquake, so even if he'd wanted to be concerned for Sara he couldn't have for any real amount of time. Only after he was permitted to remain conscious did he begin to really even question where Sara was and when he could see her.
